What is the STEM Project?
Stem is a collaborative learning program between Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In order to complete the final project we will need to incorporate skills from all of these areas. Our task is to first create a scaled house out of cardboard and tape, then attach electrical wires and appliances such as lights and fans. Before finally calculating the cost to construct the house, the cost of the electricity and the efficiency of our electrical appliances. These tasks will be completed in Technological Applied Studies class, Science class and Mathematics class respectively.
The Blog
This blog will contain information about our project and weekly reports of our work.
Focus Questions
Every week, I will answer two focus questions. These will be underneath the title of each week, however, they will be answered in the Weekly Blog Progress Report.
|
Weekly Blog Progress Report
Each week, I will also fill out a progress report. This will contain the roles of each member that week, the contributions we made and the challenges we faced.
|
The Posts
There will be posts each week with the content that was covered in class each lesson. Each lesson has its own post and any images, videos or other sources can be found either at the bottom of the post, or directly to the right.

The Construction Process
Our first task was to create a floor plan and construct a scaled house, with doors and windows. The scale of our house was 1:20. This meant that every 1cm = 20cm, and therefore 5cm = 100cm = 1m. Our maximum area was 25cm squared. This created a real challenge when it came to conserving enough space to make room for necessary furniture.

This floor plan is not to the scale that we constructed our house to. It only shows the layout of the furniture, doors and windows

Electronics and Appliances
Our next task is to fit working electrical appliances and lights to the houses. This task is yet to be completed, so check back later for more information
Construction and Electricity Bill
Our final task is to calculate the cost to both build the house and to run all of the electrical appliances. We will also have to calculate the efficiency (useful energy output/energy used) of all of our lights and other appliances. This task is yet to be completed, so check back later for more information
